The DR Congo is located in Africa next to Rwanda
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo, or formally known as Zaire) has recently went threw a genocide caused by the Genocide in Rwanda. Rwanda experienced a genocide that hugely impacted the events in the DR Congo. In Rwanda, “The RPF (Rwandan Patriotic Front), defeated the Hutu movement, and came to power in July, 1994”(Democratic). The genocide that has occurred in the DR Congo is very closely related to the genocide that occurred in Rwanda. The genocide in the DR Congo was caused by the Congo Wars. Rwanda’s “refugee presence in Zaire, among other factors, led to the first Congo War in 1996”(Democratic). The Congo War caused for many people to lose there lives result being genocide. In 1998, the First Congo War was brought to an end, Kabila became president, and the country name was changed from Zaire to The Democratic Republic of the Congo. The newly founded DR Congo was experiencing some problems. The New president, “However, his attempts to break connections with Uganda and Rwanda, and his failures to protect the Tutsis living in eastern DRC, set the foundation for the Second Congo War”(Democratic). This was very devastating to the Congolese (people from the DR Congo). The Second Congo war was the biggest contributor to the genocide in the DR Congo. The death rate was vey high “During this time, many rebel groups were formed, and over 5.4 million people lost their lives.”(Democratic). This is when much of the killing occurred. Between 1994- 2003 is when this devastation occurs with the majority of deaths between 1998-2003.
